Rev. John Opoku founded the College of Functional Education with a vision to provide practical, vocational, and hands-on training for the youth of Sekyere and its surrounding areas—especially for those unable to continue to Senior High School. He firmly believed that every young person should have the opportunity to learn a trade if they were unable to pursue higher education after completing their basic studies.
At the request of the people of Sekyere, the institution later evolved into a Senior High School. Despite financial difficulties, the school persevered thanks to the unwavering support of key individuals, including the Chief of Sekyere (Nana Sekyerehene), Obaapa Ama Serwaah, and the school’s first headmaster, Mr. Kwadwo Fosu Jumah. Their dedication kept the school running until Mr. Jumah’s passing in 2020.
Following his demise, Mr. Samuel Agyei Akwasi took over as headmaster, demonstrating remarkable leadership and resilience in managing the school despite significant challenges. His commitment to sustaining the school and overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles has earned him the admiration and gratitude of the community.
In December 2023, Rev. John Opoku passed away, leaving behind a school that, while still operational, faced severe challenges and the looming threat of closure.
Determined to preserve his legacy, his brother, Mr. Kwabena Opoku-Berchie, and his widow, Mrs. Edith Dela Opoku, mobilized family members, friends, and prominent members of the Sekyere community—both in Ghana and abroad—to rally support for the school.
Through the relentless efforts of this committee, and with special gratitude to Obaapa Ama Serwah Neequaye Tetteh and Dr. Paul Appiah-Konadu, along with support from the Member of Parliament for the Sekyere Kumawu District, the school was officially absorbed by the Ministry of Education as a government-assisted Senior High Technical School in December 2024.
Rev. Opoku’s vision and dedication have left a lasting legacy for the people of Sekyere, ensuring that future generations will continue to benefit from quality education and vocational training.
